KATAS All Messages Chip for AIS Engine

The KATAS All Messages Chip (AMC) is a replacement microcontroller for the popular AIS Engine in both original and re-badged forms. Unlike the KATAS OnBoard module which utilises a more powerful microcontroller mounted on a small pcb, this product is a one-in, one-out, simple chip replacement using the same microcontroller type as the original. Whereas the KATAS OnBoard gives greater functionality by providing comprehensive human-understandable screen modes, the AMC simply gives standard AIVDM messages for decoding by high-level charting software such as ShipPlotter. The benefit of the AMC over the original firmware is that all AIS message types are decoded into AIVDM sentences, whereas the original firmware just decodes a selection of the more common message types, even though those undecoded messages may be being routinely received by the radio circuitry.

Use of the KATAS All Messages Chip requires the original equipment to be opened up which means that the manufacturer's integrity seals will need to be removed. Only perform this modification if you are sure that your warranty has expired, or if you have no intention of making a claim on the warranty, should a problem occur.

In order to allow greater decoding efficiency within the constraints of the limited memory space available, two little-used functions of the original firmware have had to be dispensed with. The AMC loses the ability for 4,800 baud GPS sentences to be fed in via the blue wire and also loses the proprietary message which followed each transmission of an AIVDM sentence. What is gains in their place is the ability for every message to be decoded and much easier reconfiguration ability, which were felt to be much more important features.

Requirements:

  • Recommended use is with PC computer with available serial port running ShipPlotter software from COAA
  • Occasional Internet access is required to register ShipPlotter software and to obtain updates.
  • ShipPlotter software requires pentium-grade Windows PC with high graphics resolution. Soundcard is not needed.
  • If not using ShipPlotter, check that your high level software can display targets from class-B systems.
  • Terminal emulation software such as HyperTerminal (supplied with Windows OS) is required to alter configurations.

Features:

  • Outputs Standard AIS !AIVDM sentences at 38,400 baud, which are compatible with many charting programs.
  • No soldering is required for fitment; the unit simply plugs in.
  • Encodes all AIS message types to !AIVDM sentences, both broadcast and addressed, including class B vessel reports.
  • Messages handled can be up to the full five slot length.
  • Allows easy control of bi-channel receiver channel (A, B or Alternating every ~36s) by simple keyboard command.
  • Continuously measures and averages noise floor level and dynamically adjusts internal squelch to compensate.
  • Allows fine tuning of squelch (1-10) which gives good performance in quiet RF environments.
  • Higher squelch values (10-99) are able to blank all but the very strongest signals, if needed.
  • Stores all user parameters in non-volatile RAM, no need to re-enter configurations each time.
  • Includes details of how to fit red and green LEDs for indication of signal decoding status.
  • Includes software emulation of physical LEDs, indicating decoding status.
  • Can output !AIVDM messages in both wide and multi-line formats.
  • Command interpretter can be locked, preventing changes to configuration occuring whilst running.

Supplied with:

  • Comprehensive configuration guide leaflet.
  • Instruction leaflets describing chip fitment and (optional) LED installation procedures.
  • Detailed HyperTerminal configuration instructions, especially for new users.
  • Firmware will be continually developed, especially if new message types or updates to AIS protocols emerge.
  • Existing customers can upgrade chip by service exchange and small fee to cover shipping expenses.
  • 12 months return-to-base warranty, excepting for damage caused by user modifications.
