The KATAS system has been designed primarily for use by professional technicians to assist in diagnosing operational faults when maintaining systems for maritime use. AIS receivers within the KATAS range are for ship monitoring and tracking purposes and should not be used for navigation. If any of these receivers is used on-board a ship whilst at sea, their use should be limited to providing information about nearby ship movements and to aid in vessel identification as a primer to more effective voice communications.

It cannot be assumed that all commercial vessels carry AIS transponders, nor can it be assumed that any vessel that should carry an AIS transponder, actually has it fully operational. Therefore, the KATAS equipment should not be relied upon to give a complete picture of the ships in the area. If any KATAS product is carried on board any vessel, it must be remembered that, whilst the system may provide useful information about the ships in the surrounding waters, there is no guarantee that the information provided, or the data generated from it, is without errors and omissions. Under no circumstances should any KATAS product be used where there is safety of lives and equipment at stake.

When using KATAS AIS receivers in conjunction with PC software applications, be aware of any usage restrictions of that software. Although compatibility with PC software applications may be indicated in publicity material, there can be no guarantee of correct operation with KATAS AIS receivers. It is not possible to test all combinations of software applications and connection possibilities. However, Katech engineers are prepared, within reason, to investigate reported incompatibility issues that may result in changes to receiver system firmware.

Legislative rules regarding the reception of radio transmissions vary considerably from country to country. KATAS AIS receivers are only for use in those countries where such radio reception is permitted. The manufacturers and suppliers have no control over the use of any KATAS or ShipPlotter product and it is the user's responsibility to consider whether the use of these products is within the rules in a given country. The existence and availability of KATAS products is not to be construed as an incitement to use KATAS products for, or in conjunction with, any illegal activity.
